Powered by Fotomerchant.comClimate change is real, we at Solar Whisper take it seriously and our boats are designed with this is mind, by reducing noise and pollution on our water ways. The benefits of electric solar boats are far reaching, not just for yourself but also for the beautiful Daintree river and its inhabitants. No fumes, no noise, no petrol and oil leaks. Petrol powered marine engines are among the highest contributors of hydrocarbons, oxides, and nitrogen emissions in the country. A 2007 research paper from the Australian Government found that marine engines (particularly small 2-stroke outboards) contribute significantly to levels of smog and pollution. The research paper summarizes:
“Significant power is needed to move small boats through the water – even better performing and relatively ‘clean’ engines emit far greater quantities of pollutants per hour than a typical modern car engine. One hour of operation of a boat that complies with US 2006 emission standards (i.e. has a relatively clean engine) produces the same pollution as about fifty cars operated at a similar speed. Older style outboard engines that do not comply with US EPA 2006 limits are likely to emit around ten times the amount of pollution compared to conforming engines”

Solar whisper is a 9m fiberglass solar electric "Goodwin" long boat. The hull was built in Port Moresby and interior fitted just north of Townsville then roof and railings added in Cairns. The boat is long and narrow so as to be efficiently propelled by the electric outboard motors. The "Ray" motors were imported from the USA and are fitted with state of the art pancake style permanent magnet electric motors. Modern, efficient solar panels on the roof help to charge the Lithium Ion batteries.
Electric boats allow you to glide down the river with no impact on the environment - see, hear and smell nature with no exhaust or petrol fumes. seating is along the edges so everyone has a window seat with a good view. For hard to see wildlife the boat is fitted with "Croc Cam" which acts like communal binoculars.
White Ibis is a 7.3m Debco extremely quiet electric boat. The hull is of a traditional slipper style that slips through the water very efficiently. It is propelled by an inboard brushless Motenergy motor and powered by 4 x 12v (48v) 300ah lithium ion batteries. There are no solar panels on this boat but it is plugged in at home where we have a solar system.
